Believe it or not I actually was not too sleepy last night when I laid down in my bed at 9:30. So I decided to read a little from a favorite book - Don't Sweat The Small Stuff. (DSSS) This book is full of 100 little tidbits of advice that encourage you to not let the small things in life drive you crazy. I began reading last night and I read to number 46 - and then I got tired so I will pick up later. I thought though that I would try to share some of the pieces of advice as shown in the book.
As I researched the book I also found some other "Small Stuff" books that I would like to read - DSSS at work, DSSS in Love, DSSS with your family, and DSSS for Women. I have been saving up a few gift cards from Borders and now I think I know what I will buy - these books along with any new Nicholas Sparks books! Maybe if I read these books It will help me to not get so worked up over things.
I consider myself very easy going yet it seems that at times I do get a little worked up and over-react to some things and then when looking at it in hindsight I realize that maybe it wasn't really such a big deal. I hope you enjoy some of the excerpts from this book and maybe they will help you too!
So here we go....
1. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff
# 1 is actually the title of the book as well but tells us to not get so worked up over little things that when looked at closer really are not a big deal. At times we focus on little problems and blow them way out of proportion. Examples include when someone cuts in front of you while driving. How many of you get all worked up and maybe push on the gas a little harder, flick a certain finger, or say a few choice words to the driver even though they cannot hear you?? Now I don't really do these things but I do find that if I am running late I start getting worked up because I am a punctual person.
What about when you have to wait in a really long line at a store? What good does it REALLY do to get all mad and complain and make sighs when the line is out of your control? I felt good a few weeks ago (actually on New Years Eve) when I went to the store and had to wait a pretty long time. The line was not long but when I went to swipe my card the computer broke down because it was that very windy day and can cause the machines to do this. It had to be restarted (3 times!) and it took like 15 minutes to re-boot. I could tell the lady behind me was getting antsy looking at other lines that she could quickly go to but I just waited patiently for it to come back on. I swear the clerk apologized 5 times as I was standing there. The manager came over and apologized and then as I was leaving they said sorry again - I just said - no big deal - it's not your fault and went on my merry way.
Isn't patience one of the virtues?? I usually do have good patience - after all I do teach first grade. What types of things do you have little or no patience for? I'd love to hear your comments.
